Sankofa African American Studies Society

The Sankofa African American Studies Society (S.A.F.A.S) was founded during the Fall 2021 semester, holding its first organizing meeting on October 20th in the African American Studies (AFA) Conference Room in Turlington Hall. Founding members include President Ms. Mouray Hutchinson, Vice President Ms. Symone Alford, Secretary Ms. Asha Clarke, Treasurer Ms. Kiara Thompson, and Historian Mr. Kenneth Tinoco. The faculty adviser is Dr. Courtney Moore Taylor, an AFA Lecturer.

The society is a student-led organization of African American Studies majors, minors, and enthusiasts who are committed to supporting the AFA program, exposing students to professional development opportunities, connecting students to AFA alumni, and bridging the gap between the university and the larger Gainesville community.

Sankofa Society’s first General Body meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 12th at 5:30 P.M. in the AFA Conference Room (TUR1012).
