The prestigious Abdias Nascimento Award, named after the Brazilian writer, scholar, activist, and politician who played a significant role in the emergence of Black Studies as an academic discipline in the United States, Europe, and Puerto Rico, has provided funding for Brazilian undergraduate, graduate students and researchers from NEAB-UDESC (http://www.faed.udesc.br/?id=1844) to study at the University of Florida beginning since November 2017. It will also enable a scholarly exchange in which African American studies faculty and affiliates will be able to travel to Brazil, and Brazilian scholars will come to the United States. In addition, the grant also includes funds that may be used to start a new journal.
The grant, one of only 32 awarded in a global competition, is the fruition of the outstanding work of Dr. Tanya Saunders, African American Studies Affiliate, Associate Professor in the the Center of Latin American Studies and the Center for Research on Gender, Sexualities and Women’s Studies Research.
