Reception Honoring Dr. Zoharah Simmons

On Friday April 19th at 5pm in the Keene Faculty Center in Dauer Hall, the African American Studies Department will co-sponsor a reception to honor Dr. Gwendolyn Zoharah Simmons who will retire at the end of the spring semester.  Dr. Simmons has been a tireless activist educator for many years as a beginning with her membership in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during her college years.  Since then, she has continued to fight for civil rights, voting rights, economic justice, and community empowerment.  We have been honored to have her as a member of the African American Studies faculty for many years.  She has taught numerous courses such as Key Issues in Black Atlantic Thought, Race and Religion, African American Religion, and Civil Rights and Religion.  We look forward to celebrating her many accomplishments at the University of Florida at the reception honoring her.
