The African American Studies Program at the University of Florida offers a critical, multidisciplinary examination of African American experiences and perspectives. Our scholarship, curriculum, and programming focus on the United States project from an African Diasporic perspective with particular attention to justice. Our areas of focus include Black Social Movements, 20th- and 21st-century history, Black Feminist and Womanist history, Diasporic Studies, Black Popular Culture, and Digital Studies.
Our courses explore the social histories of Black life in the Americas through historical, cultural, political, economic, and social inquiry. We offer numerous opportunities for students to study through various pathways. The African American Studies program offers special interest training to undergraduate students considering admission to graduate and professional schools, as well as careers in political science, law, education, journalism, social work, psychology, city planning, and those interested in digital life and community. African American Studies classes are consistently filled with diverse students and are intentionally designed as spaces for students to expand their cultural awareness. Our students come from every college at the University of Florida.
African American Studies’ interdisciplinary nature offers students opportunities to position themselves well for an increasingly competitive graduate admissions and employment landscape.
