The African American Studies Program at the University of Florida provides a critical multi-disciplinary examination of African American experiences and perspectives. Our scholarship, curriculum, and programming focus on the United States project from an African Diasporic perspective with particular attention to justice. Our focuses include Black Social Movements, 20th and 21st Century History, Black Feminists and Womanists History, Diasporic Studies, Black Popular Culture, and Digital Studies.
Our courses explore the social histories of Black life in the Americas through historical, cultural, political, economic, and social inquiry. We offer many opportunities for students to study with various pathways to choose from. African American Studies offers special interest training to undergraduate students considering admission to graduate and professional schools, political science and law careers, education, journalism, social work, psychology, city planning, and those interested in digital life and community. African American Studies classes are always full of diverse students and are designed as spaces for students to grow their cultural awareness. Our students come from every college at the University of Florida.
Our faculty and students are committed to understanding humans and their potential for creativity and transformation through rigorous and cutting-edge research. Our students win awards for academic excellence and are often tracked for graduate placement.
African American Studies’ interdisciplinary nature offers students opportunities to position themselves well for an increasingly competitive graduate admissions and employment landscape.
