Dr. Kevin Winstead joins the Black Boys and Tech Initiative in Chicago, Illinois, to discuss opportunities for the representation of Black boys in higher education and the technology field. Dr. Winstead joins Genius Amaraizu, PhD Student at Northwestern University; Dr. Aaron Dial, Assistant Professor at Colgate University; Dr. Kareem Edouard, Assistant Professor at Drexel University; Dr. Rayvon Fouché, Professor at Northwestern University; Jonathan Givan, PhD student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Ngozi Harrison, PhD Student at UCLA; Dr. James Holly Jr., Assistant Professor at Southern University A&M College; and Dr. Reginold Royston, Associate Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Among the initiative’s outputs are three essays addressing Black boys, those who care for them, and the institutional infrastructures that support education, science, and technology. The first of these publications includes “How the Tech Industry Fails Black Boys and How Community Can Lead the Way” for Successful Black Parenting. The Black Boys and Tech Initiative is part of the Humanity and Technoscience (HAT) Lab at Northwestern University and is affiliated with the Digital Inquiry, Speculation, Collaboration, and Optimism (DISCO) Network.
