African American Studies Welcomes UF’s Class of 2029 at Fall Convocation
AFAM at 2025 Convocation
On August 24th, the African American Studies department proudly participated in the University of Florida’s Fall 2025 Convocation, held in the Reitz Union Ballroom. This annual event marks the beginning of the academic journey for incoming Gators, and our department was thrilled to be part of the celebration.
Faculty, staff, and student leaders from African American Studies and our official student organization, the Sankofa Society, engaged with first-year students to share the transformative power of our curriculum. Through vibrant conversations and informational materials, we introduced students to the possibilities of majoring or minoring in African American Studies, emphasizing the program’s interdisciplinary approach to Black history, culture, media, politics, and social justice.
“African American Studies doesn’t just teach history—it equips students with the tools to critically engage the world around them,”
– Chalisa Budhai, Sankofa Society member & African American Studies Major
The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of community, scholarship, and cultural engagement. We’re excited to welcome new students into our classrooms, our conversations, and our collective journey toward a more just and informed society.
