Visiting Assistant Professor of African American Studies
Dr. Bryce Henson is Visiting Assistant Professor of African American Studies at the University of Florida. His research interests include media & cultural studies, the African diaspora, Black feminist/queer theory, critical ethnography, Black masculinity, cultural production, and critical theory,.
In 2016-2017, he was the Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of African American Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
His work has been published or is forthcoming in Transnational Social Review: A Social Work Journal; Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education, and Society; Friktion Magasin; Encyclopedia of Educational Philosophy and Theory; Handbook of Diasporas, Media, and Culture; Decolonizing Hip Hop: Blackness and Indigeneity in Hip Hop Culture; and Cultural Studies<->Critical Methodologies.
His current project, Diasporic Deviations: Race, Gender, and Hip-Hop Cultures in Bahia, analyzes the lives and creative arts of Black performers and cultural producers in Salvador, Brazil that deviate from the normative and essentialist forms of national and diasporic belonging.
Dr. Henson teaches courses on Black Cultural Studies, the African Diaspora, and Global Hip-Hop.
During the fall 2017 semester, Bryce will be teaching Introduction to African American Studies, which fulfills writing, humanities, and diversity credit, and the African Diaspora, which fulfills the 6,000 writing requirement. During the spring 2018 semester, he will teach Introduction to African American Studies and International Hip Hop. We are very pleased that he has decided to join our faculty.
