On Tuesday  September 5th at 6pm in Smathers Library room 100, the African American Studies Program will sponsor a showing of Kenbe Fem.  After the documentary ends, the audience will engage in a Q&A session with filmmaker David Pierre-Louis.

The term, Kenbe Fem, means “to hold firm” and is a common phrase in Haitian culture. The documentary discusses the way in which Haitians persevered after the devastating earthquake that took place on January 12, 2010 which resulted in over 250,000 deaths.

David Pierre-Louis, a Haitian-American and Seattle art-venue owner, traveled to Haiti to find his mother in the aftermath of the earthquake.  The film also talks about the challenges faced by the Haitian government & various NGOs and features interviews with Dr. Manoucheka Celeste, Assistant Professor of African American Studies and Women’s Studies.
